New Health Choice for Vegetarians

SOLGAR INTRODUCES VITAMIN E

MIXED VEGETARIAN SOFTGELS

Leonia, N.J. - (June 3, 2002) – Good news for health-conscious vegetarians. Solgar Vitamin and Herb proudly introduces Vitamin E Mixed Vegetarian Softgels to its quality line of premium natural health products. This innovative new product, offered as an addition to its existing product line, represents Solgar’s continued commitment to providing a wide range of products to satisfy the unique needs of all of its customers.

Advanced proprietary technology has enabled Solgar to introduce this truly vegetarian softgel (historically, softgels have relied upon gelatin, a n animal derived ingredient, to form their semi-solid shells). Solgar’s new softgels are similar to gelatin-based softgels in appearance, texture, and size but do not contain any products of animal origin.

"At Solgar, we recognize that the needs of our vegetarian consumers are different from our other customer groups," said Ed Lemmo, Ph.D., R.D., Vice President, Product Development, Solgar Vitamin and Herb. "Solgar’s Vitamin E Mixed Vegetarian Softgels address those needs and are high quality, easy-to-swallow, all-natural vitamin E supplements containing all of the tocopherols found in nature."

Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) was first isolated from plant oils. The term tocopherol was used to name the initial four compounds that shared a similar structure: a complex ring and a long saturated side chain. Tocopherols are the primary fat-soluble antioxidants that help minimize the effects of free-radicals. Of the four compounds, designated as alpha, beta, delta and gamma tocopherols – alpha tocopherol has the greatest nutritional and biological value. Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol) may help: prevent pol yunsaturated fatty acids from breaking down and combining with substances that may harm the body, maintain muscle and nerve function, bring nourishment to cells, strengthen capillary walls, protect red blood cells from being destroyed by poisons, such as hydrogen peroxide, in the blood, promote healthy immune function, and decrease platelet aggregation (thins blood). Solgar offers the natural "D" form of vitamin E (D-alpha tocopherol).

Solgar’s Vitamin E Mixed Vegetarian Softgels contain 200, 400, or 1000 IU of natural vitamin E as d-alpha tocopherol plus mixed tocopherols (d-gamma tocopherol, d-delta tocopherol, and d-beta tocopherol). These are the same products offered in Solgar’s existing line of natural vitamin E mixed softgels. One softgel is recommended as a daily do se.

Solgar’s natural Vitamin E Mixed Vegetarian Softgels are free of sugar, salt, yeast, wheat, and dairy products and are formulated without the use of preservatives, artificial flavors or colors.

"Research suggests that seven out of ten consumers prefer clear softgels over other dosage forms," said Leslie Shue, Director of Marketing, Solgar Vitamin and Herb. "We are excited that our vegetarian softgels will offer consumers the form they want for such a vital nutrient."
